Need and priorities of Environmental Education

India is the seventh largest landmass in the world. People of different castes, creeds and colors live here. There is diversity in terms of culture, traditions and wealth here. Food grain production has grown faster with the fast growing population. There are better services in all the fields whether it is the field of health or the field of nutrition. With the fast growing population there is a pressure on our natural resources.

Environment in our country is facing so many challenges. There is a need to aware people about protection and proper management of environmental resources. Our constitution had laid down the responsibility of Government to protect and improve the environment (constitution of India, Article48-A) and made it a

Fundamental duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife” (constitution of India, Article 51-G).

Environmental degradation is in an alarming rate resulting in various environmental issues such as ozone depletion, global warming, acid rain and greenhouse effect.

Environmental Education is a relevant means to aware people about their environmental problems and encourages them to participate in solving local problems.

Environmental Education is the need of the hour. In spite of conducting seminars and conferences the citizens must be empowered with the knowledge and information regarding environmental sustainability. Concern and appreciation for the environment are the values that need to be inculcated in the early stages of development.

Environmental Education properly understood should constitute a comprehensive lifelong education, one responsive to changes in a rapidly changing world .It should prepare the individual for life through an understanding of the major problems of the contemporary world, and the provision of skills and attributes needed to play a productive role towards improving life and protecting the environment with due regards to ethical values.” (The First Intergovernmental conference on Environmental Education Tbilisi 1977)

Environmental Education should be an important part of every individuals learning, so that one can help in solving the environmental problems. The best place to start such learning is school.
